Migrating to Office 365 - Our Top 7 Questions from Clients

Are you thinking about using Mover to migrate your enterprise data to Office 365? If so, the questions you have are likely the ones you’ll see in this article. These are the questions we hear the most, and the answers will help you carry out a smooth migration whether it’s large, small, or somewhere in between. So let’s get into the top 7 questions we hear about migrating data into Office 365 with Mover:

1. How are OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online different?

SharePoint Online is a team space where groups of people collaborate on projects. It has collaboration features like sites and dashboards. Data is accessible to everyone on the team, and no user owns data individually.

In our clients’ Office 365 migrations, team data usually goes to SharePoint Online. Data owned by individual users typically goes to OneDrive for Business, where it continues to be owned by individual users.

If you were to migrate your users’ data to SharePoint Online, no individual user would own data anymore. All the data would be owned by a library accessible to everyone on the team.

One last fun fact: OneDrive for Business users can still share their individual data with others. This shared data shows up in a view called “Shared with me.”

2. Do you support modern SharePoint sites?

3. Do I have to set up sites, libraries, and users in Office 365?

Yes! Mover can only migrate data to sites, libraries, and users that exist. If they don’t exist, there’s nowhere for your data to go.

If we were to set these things up for you, it would require us to have a higher level of access to your company systems and information. It’s also outside the scope of what our Connectors do. For these reasons, it’s up to you, but we can give you guidance on how to set up these data destinations so your migration runs like a dream.

4. What happens to invalid characters in folder and file names?

Office 365 doesn’t support some characters. To remove these characters from your folder and file names, you will have to… do nothing! Mover automatically removes invalid characters and replaces them with an underscore.

5. What about long paths for folder and file names?

Microsoft has a 400-character path length limit for folder and file names. If the length exceeds that, the folders and files in that path won’t transfer. You need to fix long paths before you migrate.

But good news: Mover’s got a way for you to shorten your paths with the least possible effort.

During a free scan for your migration, we identify which paths are too long. Then we recommend folders to rename with something shorter. Our recommendations can mean fixing your long paths with just three or four renames instead of thousands.

6. Should I turn off the OneDrive for Business sync client?

Yes! We recommend you turn it off prior to your migration, and don’t turn it on again until the migration is complete. If you leave it on, the sync client will try to download all the data that’s migrating. This can fill up your users’ hard drives with unwanted data.

If you absolutely must keep syncing data during a migration, you can use the sync client to do selective syncing. This way, you choose what you do and don’t sync, telling the client to do things like sync only a specific folder, for example. As long as you’re on top of what is syncing when, you can avoid filling up your users’ hard drives with unwanted data.

7. Do you keep timestamps?

For folders, no. But for files, yes!

Mover does not keep the original timestamps for folders. The timestamps for your folders in Office 365 will be the date of your migration. But we do preserve the original timestamps for the files and data that we transfer into your Office 365 folders.

8. How did you get to be so great at migrating data?
